The University was proposing a major overhaul of the catering facility, including the present Refectory, with work commencing in either January or April 2009. During this period (which might be as long as eighteen months) it was proposed to site the Chess Club in the ground floor cafe area of the Berrill Building, adjacent to the East Gate. New tables were of suitable shape, and a lockable cupboard would be provided for the clubs equipment. 3.01 Noted: That members were grateful for the consideration that accommodation planners had given to the Chess Club. It would be important to give clear information to both members and visiting teams in advance of any change of venue. 4.00 Secretarys Report 4.01 Received: A report from the Secretary (AGM08/1). 4.02 Noted: That whilst several members had experience of working with juniors, and the necessary CRB clearance, running a junior section prior to adult club sessions was a considerable commitment: and since the Berrill cafe was a walkthrough area it would not be practical to do so during the period of refurbishment. 5.00 Treasurers Report 5.01 Received: A report from the Treasurer, together with a copy of the accounts 2007/2008. 5.02 Approved: The accounts, as a true record. 5.03 Noted: With concern, the apparent loss of fifteen chessboards. Enquiries had been made of chess organisers in the Eastern Counties Chess Union, in case these had been borrowed for other events. If these proved unsuccessful, the meeting approved the purchase of replacements. 5.04 That because of slippage in club tournaments no trophies had been bought this year; increasing the clubs bank balance to 2,276.66 5.05 Approved: As proposed by the Treasurer, to keep the subscriptions for 2008/2009 at the current rate (i.e. 15 for adult member, 9 for under 18s, OAPs, and new members joining after April 2009.) 6.00 Tournament Secretarys Report 6.01 Noted: That Adrian Elwin had started a new set of tournaments which were due to be completed by the end of November 2009. Tim Woods had won the Club Knockout, beating George Ward in the final. Later this year Adrian would be circulating members about the next set of tournaments and the formats to be adopted. 7.00 Captains reports 7.01 Received: The following reports from team captains: MKA Adrian Elwin Narrowly beaten into second place by Bedford A (only half a game point difference). Suffered by losing several strong players in the first weeks of the season. MKB Tim Woods Relegated from Division 1. Had strong top board, scoring over 50%, but struggled to field five players per match, because needed to draw on 2nd Division players. MKC Dave Wells Second to bottom in Division 2. Higher boards consistently outgraded. Able to offer league experience to juniors. MKD Ray Holland Top half of Division 2; much more successful before Xmas than after. MK/Buckingham Alan Heath 5th place improvement from previous season. Top board was most successful player, but now moving to Northampton. Team will not exist in 2008/9. OU Paul Kendall 4th in Division 1. More difficult to field regular team due to illness and other commitments. Milton Keynes Adrian Elwin Two difficult away matches in National Club Major section. Did not enter Rapidplay tournament. 7.02 Noted: That Paul Kendall did not wish to continue as OU Captain, and that Dave Wells did not wish to continue as an MK Captain. 7.03 Agreed: After discussion, that the club should seek to maintain two teams in the first Division of the Bedfordshire League ( of which one should carry the name of the Open University), and three teams in the second Division of the Bedfordshire League. Four teams would carry the name of Milton Keynes. 8.00 Election of Officers 8.01 Agreed: To appoint the following officers for 2008- 2009 ( all nem con): Chairman George Ward Secretary Paul Kendall Treasurer Alan Heath Tournament Secretary Adrian Elwin Milton Keynes A Captain Adrian Elwin Milton Keynes B Captain Ray Holland Milton Keynes C Captain John McKeown Milton Keynes D Captain Alan Heath Milton Keynes National Clubs Captain (Major) Paul Kendall Milton Keynes National Clubs Captain (Minor) Tim Woods 8.02 Noted: That the Committee would consider whether to enter teams in the National Clubs under-100 competition, and the proposed EACU Club Championship, when conditions governing these competitions were clearer. 9.00 Other Business 9.01 Reported: That a tournament would be held in Newport Pagnell, the weekend of 14th-16th November, the organisation of which was unconnected with the Milton Keynes Chess Club, the Bedfordshire Chess Association, or the EACU. 9.02 That the English Chess Federation was in process of adjusting players grades, and to this end, had published new grades recently, for potential launching in the 2009/2010 season. For the time being all organisations (including this club) would be using the official old-style grades.
